A Day in Setúbal: Mountains, Sea, and Culture

Setúbal is one of those cities that surprises visitors who spend just a day there. Located less than 50 km from Lisbon, it combines mountains, the sea, culture, and cuisine. And best of all: you can explore a little bit of everything, at your own pace.

In this itinerary, we’ll show you how to make the most of 24 hours in Setúbal, from dolphin watching in the Sado Estuary to sunset in Arrábida, including the city’s best local snacks.

Morning: Dolphin Watching on the Sado

Morning is the best time to sail on the Sado Estuary. The wind is calmer, the light is soft, and the bottlenose dolphins are particularly active after a night of hunting.

In the morning, especially in July and August, temperatures are milder and the dolphins are closer to the surface. In 2 hours and 30 minutes, you can experience the magic of the Sado, get to know the dolphins, and see the city from the river. To make the experience even more special, choose certified companies with expert guides who know each dolphin by name. Rotas do Sal is a prime example: a company that has been operating for over 20 years, where each bottlenose dolphin is recognized by its fin, and whose sustainable tourism practices are certified by the Blue Flag award, alongside institutions such as the ICNF.

Mid-morning: coffee and regional pastries in the historic center

After the tour, Setúbal’s historic center is a 10-minute walk from the pier. Take a seat at an outdoor café in Praça do Bocage and order a torta or a queijada from Azeitão. The city is slowly waking up, and this is the perfect time to soak up the local atmosphere.

Lunchtime: Setúbal’s best snack

Having lunch in Setúbal is practically a must. The Livramento Market was voted one of the best municipal markets in Europe – and for good reason. At the market’s eateries, you’ll find:

  • Fried cuttlefish, the city’s most iconic dish;
  • Clams à la Bulhão Pato with cilantro and garlic;
  • Sado oysters, fresh and served immediately;
  • Azeitão cheese and Alentejo bread.

Afternoon: Take a dip at one of the beaches in the Serra da Arrábida

After lunch, immerse yourself in the beauty of Arrábida – literally. Just 15 minutes from downtown, there are must-see beaches waiting for you:

  • Praia da Figueirinha, the largest and most family-friendly, with parking and beach amenities;
  • Praia dos Galapos, adjacent to Galapinhos, quieter and with a longer stretch of sand;
  • Praia dos Galapinhos, voted the best beach in Europe in 2017. Crystal-clear water and access via a boardwalk through pine trees;
  • Coelhos Beach, the most secluded, accessible only on foot;
  • Portinho da Arrábida, the smallest, with a grilled seafood restaurant right on the sand;
  • Creiro Beach, the most iconic, with its sandy shore nestled between the mountains and the sea. It features restaurants, bars, and a postcard-perfect setting.

In the summer, access to the mountains is more restricted due to the “Arrábida Without Cars” program. However, Rotas do Sal offers a shuttle service from downtown Setúbal, ideal for those staying in the city or arriving by train. Talk to us!

Late Afternoon: Wine and a View of the Sado

Before the day comes to a close, there’s one must-do stop: tasting Setúbal Moscatel at our shop. With dozens of regional wines to choose from, take a seat at our table to toast the region’s delicacies in a relaxed atmosphere where conversation flows – and you can even take a little piece of Setúbal home with you.

Dinner: dining with a view of the Sado

For dinner, choose a restaurant on Avenida Luísa Todi, overlooking the Sado. As the day draws to a close, a golden light illuminates the estuary. The restaurants serve everything from fresh grilled fish to more contemporary dishes. Our suggestion: the catch of the day grilled over charcoal, served with octopus salad or grilled vegetables. Simple and perfect.

You can see all of Setúbal in a single day, but it stays in your memory forever. Dolphins, the mountains, the market, the sunset. It’s hard to find another place that packs so much into such a small area.
